QUESTION: What is an OB/GYN and what do they do?

One is GYN: gynecology which deals with the female reproductive system. The other which you are inquiring about is OB: which stands for obstetrics. Obstetrician is a physician who has successfully completed specialized education and training in the management of pregnancy, labor, and pueperium (the time-period directly following childbirth).

A gynecologist is a physician who has a successfully completed specialized education and training in the health of the female reproductive system, including the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases.

Typically, the education and training for both fields occurs concurrently. Thus, an obstetrician/gynecologist is a physician specialist who provides medical and surgical care to women and has particular expertise in pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system. This includes preventative care, prenatal care, detection of sexually transmitted diseases, Pap test screening, and family planning.

At Coastal Bend Women's Center we are a full service center that includes:

  1. Laboratory Service
  2. Sonograms
  3. Bone Density Testing - Bone density (or bone mineral dentistry) is a medical term normally referring to the amount of mineral matter per square centimeter of bones. Bone density is used in clinical medicine as an indirect indicator of osteoporosis and fracture risk.
  4. CMG - A test of the bladder and how well it is working. It records pressure in the bladder, the amount of urine in the bladder, and bladder neck function (part of bladder that leads to the opening outside the body). Then it makes a graph of these values. A specially trained doctor or nurse practitioner will interpret these graphs to understand how your child’s bladder works. We do the CMG in house, no traveling to another office for this test.

Coastal Bend Women’s Center is celebrating 36 years of providing advanced healthcare in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Urogynecology and Infertility to the women of South Texas.

All ancillary services are performed in-office:
